Track Day Guide: How to Prepare Your Car for Circuit Racing
The street teaches you to avoid limits. The track teaches you to find them.
Sentul, Mandalika, Sepang — Southeast Asia has never had better circuits. But showing up with street pressure and faded DOT4 is how you end the day on a tow truck.
Pre-Track Non-Negotiables
- Tires: 200TW minimum (PS4S, AD09) — set hot pressure 32-34 psi. Bring a gauge.
- Brakes: Fresh DOT 5.1 or RBF600, pads with 50%+ life. Stock fluid boils in 3 laps.
- Cooling: New coolant, check oil level, consider 5W-40 for track temps.
- Safety: Helmet SNI, tow hook, fire extinguisher, remove loose items.
- Driver: Hydrate, sleep, walk the track. Ego off, learner on.
The Mindset Shift
On the street you brake in a straight line. On track you trail-brake to the apex, eyes up to the next corner. Your first session goal is not a lap time — it's learning the line. The clock comes later.
“The car is ready when it can do 5 hard laps without the pedal going soft or temps spiking. If it can’t, you’re not ready.” — Sofia Marquez, Mandalika instructor
Day Schedule at Sentul (IDR 2.5M)
07:00 scrutineering, 08:00 briefing, 09:00-12:00 sessions (20 min on / 40 off), lunch, afternoon open lapping. Budget IDR 4M total with fuel and tire wear. Cheaper than a speeding ticket — and legal.
Come home with glazed brakes and a grin. That’s the addiction.
